How does SIC ceramic membrane work?

2021-05-07

Membrane filtration technology has become a recognized and practicable method of separating suspended or dissolved substances in liquid, in view of its efficiency and cost effectiveness, so far it has been extensively used in various industrial liquid filtration process, such as desalination pretreatment, drinking water, wastewater treatment, membrane bioreactors, oil separation, etc.

Currently, due to the asymmetric, multi-layer structure and material natural properties, the silicon carbide tubular membrane and fat sheet membrane is mainly operated by cross-flow and submerged filtration mode respectively.

-Working principle of Cross-flow(inside-out) filtration

Cross-flow filtration is filtration mode in which starting the feed flow, the constant feed flow passes tangentially along the surface which can help to sweep away the accumulated rejected particles at the membranes, and generating two outgoing streams, a small portion of feed passes through the membrane as purified liquid, called permeate. The remaining portion of the feed, called retentate.

The key advantage of the cross-flow filtration is that it has the ability to remove the build-up of material on the membrane surface and reduce the fouling rate. The retentate stream can be easily recirculated, allowing the processing of large volumes of feed material.

-Working principle of submerged filtration mode (outside-in)

The filtration principle is submerged outside in, where the feed flow is drawn out through the membrane with suction pressure. Suspended particles are rejected on the membrane surface and forming a cake layer while clean water is passing through the membrane body and is collected at both end caps.

In-to-out backwash makes the formed cake layer comes off in flakes, air sourcing or water jet can easily clean the membrane surface and enhance the cake layer removal.

Submerged module tower

The single membrane module housing stacked to membrane towers are fully submerged in a tank which contains the feed (raw) water. All towers are connected at the top with a common header pipe. The filtered water is transported through the header set of each tower to the top and from there through the common header pipe to the tank outside where a filtration pump is connected to transfer the clean water to the filtered water tank.
